At the regular Assembly of the Croatian Biophysical Society (HBD), held on May 25, 2026 at the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb, Lucija Tomačić, PhD from the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, gave a lecture Binary karyotypes as a universal evolutionary pattern in cancers.
In the second part of the hybrid program, important decisions were made by the Assembly, awarding prominent scientists who have contributed to the domestic and international scientific community with their work.
HBD Lifetime Achievement Award
For the first time in the history of the Society, the HBD Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded. prof. Ph.D. Janko Herak, prof. emer. (1937 – 2025). The award was given for outstanding scientific contribution, the founding of modern biophysics in Croatia, visionary leadership of the Society, and the international affirmation of our science. His rich life's work represents a lasting legacy that leaves an indelible research, teaching, and publishing mark.
New honorary members of HBD
By decision of the Assembly, the following distinguished professors were elected honorary members of the Society:
Prof. Dr. Jasminka Brnjas-Kraljević, as one of the founders of biophysics in Croatia, who, through her many years of scientific, teaching and organizational activities, has made an indelible contribution to the development of this interdisciplinary branch of science and to the promotion of the goals of the Society.
Prof. Dr. Davor Juretić, emeritus professor. for his exceptional contribution to the reputation of the Society over decades of cutting-edge research in the fields of biophysics, bioenergetics, and bioinformatics. His dedicated teaching, mentorship of new generations, and uncompromising promotion of scientific excellence and ethics were particularly highlighted.
