The potential method (MP) offers a framework for constructing an abstract measurement system based on the differences in system states, rather than on the states themselves and their associated values. It is based on directed graphs with weights. Extensive measurement, as used in engineering and physics, is focused on precision and sensitivity or, in mathematical terms, Archimedeanity, and as such is not applicable in psychology, neuroscience, medicine, and economics. Instead of experimental repeatability and statistics, the measurement of preference differences, which underlies MP, is focused on consistency. The potential method generalizes the theory of expected utility (see Neumann, Morgenstern) and some methods (AHP, GMean) for multi-criteria decision-making.
