Review from the 10th Regional Biophysics Conference & 15th International Summer School of Biophysics

Split hosted renowned biophysicists on the 10th. Regional Biophysical Conference and 15. International School of Biophysics!

Two jubilee scientific events, the 10th Regional Biophysical Conference and the 15th International Summer School of Biophysics, were organized at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Split, from 26 to 30 August 2024. The organizers of the events were renowned scientists from the Croatian Biophysical Society (HBD), the Faculty of Medicine, University of Split, and the Ruđer Bošković Institute (IRB) from Zagreb.

The Regional Biophysical Conference (RBC) is a meeting of scientists from the biophysical societies of Austria, Croatia, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia and Serbia, which takes place every two years. The goal of the conference is to gather biophysicists from the mentioned countries, but also from beyond, in order to present the latest achievements in experimental, theoretical and applied biophysics in this dynamic, interdisciplinary field of science.

The special attention that HBD pays to young scientists is also reflected in the traditional International School of Biophysics, which was held for the 15th time this year. This continues the tradition of previous schools of providing young scientists with intensive socializing with top scientists and young biophysicists from all over the world at lectures, workshops, and interactive discussions, which was greatly helped by sponsors from the industry.

The carefully designed program of high scientific quality offered a clear overview of the latest developments in the field of biophysics, including topics such as molecular biophysics, biointerfaces and bioinspired materials, membranes and membrane proteins, viral biophysics, neurobiophysics, cell biophysics and nanomechanics, drug delivery, advanced imaging and spectroscopic techniques, computational methods and machine learning. The mentioned topics are relevant to biological and medical aspects of human health and the events opened up opportunities for scientific collaboration between a large number of Croatian and international scientists. In addition, the plenary speakers were excellent scientists who enjoy a high reputation in their fields, so it is not surprising that the events were attended by 120 participants from the region and the world, a large number of whom were young scientists at the beginning of their careers, but also sponsors from the economy. Thus, the main goal of the event was achieved, which was to encourage innovative research, transfer knowledge and connect science and industry with the aim of comprehensive development of this progressive and interdisciplinary scientific field.

The high quality and relevance of these events, as well as the opportunity for tourism promotion of the city of Split and the Split-Dalmatia County, were recognized by the Croatian Tourist Board, as well as the Split-Dalmatia County itself, which was the gold sponsor of these two events.
