The Faculty of Science and Mathematics in Split today officially opened an international doctoral study program in biophysics, the first of its kind in Croatia. It is an interdisciplinary study program that will educate doctors of science in biophysics, and in addition to basic research, it will also educate them for applied work in biotechnology, pharmacy and related professions. In the academic year 2008/2009, the first generation of doctoral students from various disciplines, such as physics, chemistry and molecular biology, was enrolled, and out of seven of them, three are foreigners and come from Portugal, India and Bosnia and Herzegovina. “Biophysics is one of the most propulsive contemporary sciences, and along with molecular biology, it is the profession of the future. Our goal is to create leaders in the field of biophysics, and we are very honored that the University of Split has been awarded such a valuable doctoral study program. The study program is of high quality, and the lecturers are top-notch and come from reputable world institutes and universities,” said Prof. Davor Juretić, the main organizer of the study. This international study is the result of cooperation between the Faculty of Science, MedILS and the Faculty of Medicine in Split, as well as the Ruđer Bošković Institute and the Institute of Physics in Zagreb.
